Dry vs Wet Squash? (Read 21711 times)

I like to bake, then puree winter squash with butter and brown sugar. It freezes well, so we prepare squash for winter eating in the fall when the squash is just ripe and at its prime.  Is there a secret to knowing when squash, such as Turban or Hubbard is wet inside? It's often hard to tell when buying the squash and it's dissappointing to cut it open, to find it's too wet to make a good puree.

I would bring a small clean nail and poke it in the store before buying it. You just have to do it fast.

Some people can tell by the sound it makes when you tap it. I never could hear how they know if it is wet or not.

I think if it has more water inside it is heavier.  Try picking the lighest one or one that looks like it is not over ripe.

If it is to wet i would just put some butter and brown sugar on them and cook in over. They firm up after awhile and taste good.

I think you can tell by the sound if you tap them. If it sounds hollow it should have less water.

If you tap the side and it sounds hollow or make smore noise. I think wet has more of a thud than ring when tapped.
