Can the grape sourdough starter be kept in the refrigerator in a crock jar, instead of keeping it the freezer?  Please reply with answer.

I prefer to keep it in the freezer if i am only going to use it once a week or so. But if you really use it a lot, then you can keep it in the frig and refresh it often.

The starter is a living thing and will continue to grow. That will make the flavors stronger, and eventually it may be too strong if you don't use it and refresh it with new dough from time to time..

IO tried this recipe and the resulting product was very dark, and ugly. Still I thought I would try it on just one loaf of bread to see if it turned out and lo and behold it had remarkable flavor! I was surprised at how well it turned out and how the color didn't really affect the end product.
I recommend not letting it go for more than two days before rerigerating or freezing though. My second loaf was a little too sour, even for my taste.

Hi, I used the potato water method and it was very active until the third day and went flat.  At this time I gave it a cup of flour and a cup of water but it has done nothing but develop  hooch (that watery yellow layer on top of the batter) which I stir back into it. No bubbling going on at all.  Is this normal or have I lost it?  Any info appreciated.  Dee

WinkOops...I apparently suffer from 'Poor-Impulse-Control' and from actually exploring the site more I found the recipe.

Dee, You might want to add a bit of sugar to see if you can bring it to life again. It also might be too cold so the growth is slow. Good luck!

How often do you feed yours?? I have been using a grape starter and I feed 3X a day. I only put in fridge if I am not goning to bake within a couple days.

This is the starter I asked about in another post. Still need input on that. thanks

SmileyI've kept my grape starter in the refrigerator for weeks without feeding; several days before I want to make bread, I take it out and start feeding, once a day. No problems, still nice and active.

Also use this starter in any kind of bread: pizza dough, cheddar cheesd bread, rye-wheat-walnut, whatever. Use butter, olive oil, milk - whatever complements the other ingredients.
