They always told me that brown sugar would be more natural and healthier than white sugar. A friend of mine is now saying that this was not so and I would not be up to date.

Now what is better and healthier, the natural brown sugar or the processed white sugar, and why?

I have never heard of that brown sugar would be more natural and healthier than white sugar. I use white sugar only. It is perfect for cooking. Smiley

White sugar after processing creates a by product (Molasses)  after processing  some of the white sugar has Molasses put back in to get brown sugar. the more that is added the darker the brown sugar.

Brown sugar has more flavor than white sugar and taste really good in a some recipes.

But they are both from the same plant

Brown sugar is much tastier and healthier than the white sugar. But most of the people does not use it, they have switched to white sugar.

I don't have a complete answer for you, but most brown sugar is simply white processed sugar with molasses added back. Darkness is directly impacted by the amount added back. If you find you are out of brown sugar for a recipe, make your own by adding back molasses.

As for a healthier sugar, there is a pure cane sugar that is very light brown in color, which is processed differently than the brown sugar and white sugar we generally think of.

I don't know more than that, but someone on this thread will uncover the rest of the mystery or you may find it in the sugar isle at the store - i think it comes in a box - we've had it in the past at our house, but I just can't recall what it is.  Good luck.

You must know that white refined sugar is more natural and to me, is better than the brown one. Brown sugar is refined white sugar with a molasses syrup mixed in, then dried again. Whatever form this sugar may spring from, too much of it would bring adverse effect to our health.

Don't forget there are many different types of brown sugar ranging from the very dark and thick varieties that are like wet sand to the light brown version of white sugar.

White sugar is a gateway drug to the presidency and/or slowly becoming Lindsay Lohan, whilst brown sugar is a commodity for the Taliban and dead rockers exclusively.
