White or brown, sugar will go very quickly into your blood stream. Too much sugar leads to insulin resistance, diabetes, inflammation throughout the body, higher cholesterol and other health issues. Brown sugar can be either less processed sugar, such as turbinado sugar, or the more commercially available brown sugar that is simply white sugar colored with a little molasses. Both will raise your blood sugar just as much as white sugar.
Molasses does contain calcium, iron and trace minerals - but the amount in brown sugar is so minimal that I would certainly not depend on it for any health benefits.
Honey, too, will raise your blood sugar. Honey is a different kind of sugar, so some people think it will be better for your body. Again trace minerals and antioxidants in honey may be good for you - but too much of any sweetener will create health problems.
Maple syrup is sucrose minute amounts of glucose and fructose, two other kinds of sugar. White sugar is 100 percent sucrose. There is no direct scientific evidence that maple syrup is healthier than white sugar. Diabetics need to treat maple syrup and sugar as they do other sugar products. Maple products are less refined than white sugar, so they contain minerals, antioxidants, and other compounds that may have some health benefits.
The bottom line? While some sugar makes life sweeter, too much will lead to health problems - no matter what form that sugar is in. It all gets broken down into glucose (blood sugar) in the body. Rapid increases in blood sugar levels are linked to many health problems, no matter what the source.
